Magnetic Bearing SystemThe active magnetic bearing experiment has four controlled axes (arranged in two magnetic bearings) that support a rotating shaft. Each magnetic bearing has a two-axis control. And the shaft's axial freedom is constrained by passive magnetic thrust bearings located at the two ends of the shaft. Thus, out of the six degrees of freedom (three translational and three rotational), five are constrained, and the rotation of the shaft around the Z-axis alone is unconstrained. The plant's component parts are machined out of solid aluminum (except for the bearing components) and are machined from solid aluminum blocks. A direct drive motor that revs up the rotor is connected via a flexible coupling. The plant is very easy to operate and comes with detailed instructions for configuring experiments. The system includes the electromechanical system, an integrated cabinet comprising analog interface unit, DC power supply, and power amplifier, an IBM PC based controller using a multifunction DAQ card and associated application software for implementation of digital control algorithm under Matlab® Real Time Workshop. |
